In an uncertain 2020 when it comes to sport, it was great to have all six schools back at Conolly Rugby Park last night taking the field for the second season of Wagga Wagga Super 6s!
First up at 4:30PM we had the 2019 5th and 6th placed teams with Kooringal High School taking on Wagga Wagga Christian College. Whilst WWCC looked good in periods of the match, Kooringal certainly brought more experience and aggression to the field, running away victorious with a scoreline of 70-0. Kooringal improved week-on-week in 2019, and if this where they are starting in 2020 they should be dominant by the back-end of the season. In our second match we saw the Minor Final from 2019 reoccur with The Riverina Anglican College and Wagga Wagga High School face off. TRAC certainly brought a structured game plan showing off some serious preparation over the year, and ran away with a 57-0 victory. WWHS will certainly look back on some missed opportunities and hope to turn it around in the coming weeks. In our primetime match at 6:30PM we saw a repeat of the 2019 Grand Final, with Kildare Catholic College seeking revenge on Mater Dei Catholic College. In what was a see-sawing first half, Kildare went up 10-0, before Mater Dei brought it back to 10-all before half time. Both teams certainly kept moving the ball from one end of the field to the other with open-play kicking as well as creative ball movement. Both teams will rue missed opportunities, but Kildare will be pleased to start their season with a 30-15 victory. Following last nights results the standings are:
Next weeks matches are: 4:30PM - Kildare CC v WWHS 5:30PM - Mater Dei CC v Kooringal HS 6:30PM - WWCC v TRAC * - No Spectators Allowed

After its inaugural season in 2020, Wagga Wagga Super 6s will kick off next week with all six schools recommitting for 2020.
Each Thursday, All six schools will play a game against a different opponent with Kildare Catholic College, Kooringal High School, Mater Dei Catholic College, The Riverina Anglican College, Wagga Wagga Christian College and Wagga Wagga High School taking the field at Conolly Rugby Park. Each school will be mentored by one of the three local Senior Clubs involved, Wagga Reddies, Wagga City or Wagga Waratahs. This relationship helps to build a pathway for the older students into Senior Rugby if they choose to pursue it. In the turbulent year that is 2020, unfortunately no spectators will be allowed to attend within Conolly Rugby Park, but we hope to keep all spectators up to date through our Social Media and other channels throughout the tournament. Each Thursday will see games played at 4:30PM, 6:00PM and 7:30PM with extra time allowed between games to have participants enter and exit before brief Warm Ups. We are so looking forward to this Competition getting started again for 2020, if you require any further information please contact your relevant School, or contact SIRU directly at [email protected]. In what was initially planned as a back-up competition in case the traditional Winter season of Rugby Union did not get underway, SIRU is excited to push forward with plans for a 7s competition comparable to Competitions around the world.
Nominations for teams were opened during the Winter Season, with a cap of 8 teams per Men's and Women's Grade available. There will be a tournament on 31st October 2020 in Hay, and another on 7th November 2020 in Leeton. Each Tournament will feature 40 exciting matches across the two grades, with each team guaranteed 3 Pools Matches and 2 Finals of some form through the day. Each tournament will kick off at around 11AM, and conclude at approximately 7:30PM. The Clubs involved are: Albury, Deniliquin, Griffith, Hay, Leeton, Reddies, Tumut, Wagga City, and Waratahs. Players will be required to register as per usual procedure through Rugby Xplorer. The Competition will tally points from the two tournaments to crown a Competition Champion in each Grade. The two weekends following this will see the inaugural season of Capital 7s featuring the 6 Premier Clubs of the John I Dent competition, as well as SIRU and another team involved in Men's, Women's and Colts (U20s). Great opportunity for players from SIRU to show their talents against the best players in the Capital! Draws and further details will come out closer to the event, if you are interested in being involved, reach out to your club or a club listed above to find out more about their involvement! |
